Literacy is taught across our school in an engaging and stimulating way, using exciting stories or relevant texts (which are often linked to our topics), drama and lots of talk. We give children the opportunity to be reflective and share their own ideas in a comfortable environment, as well as developing the children’s resilience when they are asked to improve and up level their own work.

In literacy sessions and throughout the school day, each teacher strives for every child  to:

  • Develop independent reading skills – Each day all children have the time to read both independently and in group situations. Children have access to a large selection of books to take home daily as well as a well-resourced library to explore. We also have a reading shed in the playground so children can choose to read during break and lunch times. Phonics is taught to Year 1 discretely 4 times a week, where they learn to read sounds and apply them in their written work. Early Years focus on learning the sounds in an interactive way, following Letters and Sounds. This will eventually enable the children to use their phonetic knowledge to decode words.


  • Discover new genres and texts - We give all children the experience to discover different texts to widen their vocabulary range, as well as exploring different genres. This is done throughout literacy lessons and topic lessons. Teachers also share stories regularly with children, as a whole class, at the end of the day. This gives them the experience of accessing stories which may be too difficult for them to read independently and will encourage discussion around the text. Sharing a wide range of stories helps to spark the childrens’ imagination and stimulate curiosity.


  • Develop spelling, punctuation and grammar skills – Spelling, grammar and punctuation skills are taught during literacy and key skills sessions across the week, alongside a weekly spelling test for children in Year 2 and above. Key Stage 2 and Year 2 have regular Key skills sessions where they complete activities to develop these skills.



  • Be proud of their own achievements in literacy – We use Pobble to publish childrens’ work weekly. This gives children a sense of achievement, lots of pride in their hard work and motivation to do their very best in every lesson. Children will be celebrated in worship every Friday and presented with a Pobble lanyard for the week. ‘Pobble Champions’ are in each class to monitor the site and record views and likes.

 In KS1 we use Collins Big Cat reading scheme and our phonics teaching is based on Letters and Sounds.
