We believe that all children can succeed in maths.   Children’s abilities are neither fixed nor innate, but can be developed through practice, support, dedication and hard work.  ‘Natural talent’ is just a starting point and does not determine who has more or less potential to achieve. The Maths curriculum focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving and we deliver this through a mastery approach which means:

  • We focus on areas for longer in order that children gain a deep and long-term understanding of concepts.  All learners benefit from deepening their conceptual understanding of maths regardless of whether they’ve previously struggled or excelled.  Children are given time to fully understand, explore and apply ideas rather than accelerate through new topics and the challenge comes from investigating concepts in new, alternative and more complex ways. 


  • We teach new concepts through a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach which allows children to build up their confidence and develop their understanding.  We choose to teach by breaking down maths objectives into the smallest steps so that every pupil is secure in each new concept. Misconceptions are identified quickly and addressed so that the emphasis is on ‘keeping up over catching up’.


  • We have a problem solving approach to learning.  Children are encouraged to identify, understand and apply relevant mathematical principles and make connections between different ideas.  Problem solving skills and strategies are taught discretely. 


  • Fluency in number facts and times tables is important and children are expected to practise these at home as well as school.  In key stages 1 and 2, children have regular quizzes to encourage them to practice these skills and improve. 


  • We have a strong emphasis on the importance of learning and using mathematical language as it is key to children developing their reasoning skills.  When children answer questions it is not only the answer that is important but also them being able to explain or justify why they believe it is the right answer.
